But mom, it’s just a Cartoon… or is it?

Before I had kids, I was convinced that they would want to play board games and color and make crafts. I didn’t think that TV. was anything they needed to watch for any extended period of time. Putting a movie in to keep them quiet seemed blasphemous. Oh my…. How actually BEING a parent changes things.

When I was a kid, Saturday mornings involved getting up early to watch the best cartoons (because that is the ONLY time they were on!) Road runner, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Popeye, yes…. Clean, fun cartoons.

Friends, I don’t have to tell you this; times have changed. When I first started hearing about Japanese cartoons, I thought that perhaps it was a fluke. Like one kid accidently happened on these cartoons.

What I’ve come to realize is that it wasn’t a fluke. Or an accident. If your kids are on any form of electronics, if they tell you they are just “watching cartoons,” please be on guard.

In a training I attended, I heard them saying that the porn industry has many of the best “psychologists” working for them and that they are targeting pre-teen kids, I was appalled. And yet a bit naive as what that might look like.

Since that time I have come to realize that it looks like cartoons. Yes CARTOONS. They are making graphic XXX rated cartoons that appeal to kids. I would say age 10 and up. I know… I couldn’t believe it when I first heard about it.  Then I took a peek for myself.  Oh.My.Stars….  I couldn’t believe what I saw, or that kids could watch it!  One glance was one too many for me.

Since that time, I have talked to several parents who are doing everything they can to bring restoration to their child who is addicted to these cartoons. We’ve talked about things like the early thought that “it’s just a cartoon and they get that it isn’t real.” NOT…. Some of these kids have progressed into other pornographic sites and addictions already at a young age.

I am heartbroken. Even this, what was so innocent when I was young, has been used in evil and depravity. And the children who are coming into contact are at risk of life long addiction, thus fueling the porn industry estimated at $14 billion per year in the U.S. (*CNBC 2012)

Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Sunday School Teachers, whoever you are. If you have contact with kids, relationships with kids, influence on kids…. Please, please, please…. Keep talking about these things. If we ignore it, we are not giving them the tools they need to make good choices. It seems that more and more things keep coming in front of our innocent ones eyes. If we continue to remain silent and in shame, we are not doing them a favor. As Christian parents, we need to pray for wisdom and appropriate conversations. Any conversation is better than no conversation and just hoping it doesn’t happen, or that they know better.

Today, this is my prayer….

Your eyes are too pure to look on evil;
you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.
Why then do you tolerate the treacherous?
Why are you silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?  – Habakkuk 1:13

Lord Jesus – we trust you in all things. We await your coming kingdom and ask that in the here and now that you will give us wisdom. Show us how to handle our everyday ordinary parenting when it looks so much different that how we might have envisioned it.
